| Day Two
Monday September 11th 2006
Mom
picked me up from school today and we rushed home to get to the
ongoing hurricane swell that's pumping in head high, semi choppy
waves. After eating a snack I rushed off with dad and his camera
to a local spot named RC's
(an old Royal Castle restaurant). It was sizable but the form was
terrible and nobody was getting any spectacular rides, including
myself. It was difficult to find an open line on a wave and make
a connection from section to section. After a couple of hours we
drove home and stopped at Bowman's for a shower and a quick peak
at the waves there. As with the last couple of days Bowman's secret
spot was smaller but better form. We'd blown it! I was too exhausted
to paddle out again and opted to wait and see what tomorrow morning
held as Hurricane Florence raced up the Atlantic. Besides... I had
a Language Arts test tomorrow and I had to study for it.
I understand there is another tropical storm developing in the Atlantic
that could keep the waves coming for another few more days and his
name is Gordon. When these storms stay at sea, they are awesome
wave makers and provide entertainment and fun for thousands of east
coast surfers. Let's hope they stay at sea and not do what they
did two years ago when Charlie, Frances and Jeannine caused us to
evacuate and go without electricity for almost three weeks. I like
to camp, but not for more than a day or two at a time.
NOTE: I'm concerned about the waves possibly being
too large at Cape Hatteras next week. I'm good in large Florida
surf up to five or six feet but Hatteras's reputation as a powerful
location makes me nervous for both me and my competitors. We'll
be expected to compete in the same surf that the men and boys do,
but will it be too much?
