| Day Twelve
Thursday September 21st 2006
I was a bit nervous in the morning and had to take
a few deep breaths. As usual the Cape Surf team and I paddled out
to surf near the pier again for an early morning session. Later
on, the boys dropped me and my mom
off at the contest.
The contest area waves were big and choppy (or unorganized
as one may call it). I went out for a small practice session just
to get used to the waves, and only got about two good waves then
had to come in so I wouldn't be to exhausted for my heat. So many
of the guys were getting killer set waves as I watched them in their
heats. I just hoped I could do as well as them.
Finally it was time, I paddled out with the other
five girls to the very outside, where as soon as the horn blew I
knew all the action would start. Honk! The heat was on. I paddled
for some waves and just kept getting worked, a surfer term for being
pounded by waves repeatedly. Unfortunately, I only got one good
wave that happened to be one of the smaller ones. I needed, at the
least, one more wave to back it up and get more points to pull into
third place, but it just didn't happen. I got stuck with fourth
place and did not advance to the finals.
After the contest I was pretty bummed, but everyone
was really encouraging about it, so I felt better. I just hope next
year I can come back with fire under my board and whip those other
girls behinds. For now, I'll just have to practice and work
my way up to be the best one out there with the help of my coach,
family, and God. Till next time, paddle out!
