Florence on Sunday provided me great waves to practice putting my board on it's edge on every turn (above) at Patrick Air Force Base (a MUST for competetive surfing). I love doing backside off-the-lips during practice like the one below my mom caught on camera in my second session Sunday morning at Cocoa Beach.

Day One
Sunday September 10th 2006

Easterns at Cape Hatteras are less than a week away and the wave God has given us a perfect storm named Florence to help me hone my surfing skills before I head northward on Friday the Cape Surf team (a little advertising pun for the shop owner). The waves Sunday were a solid 3-4 feet with occasional larger standouts' eeking their way toward the lineup. Appears the tides and storm surge is cursing many of the south Florida beaches and surf spots toward Sebastian Inlet as they are not getting quality swell during this first days of Florence. The deeper troughs are sapping the energy from waves and causing them to wimp out before crashing on the shore. We've been lucky where I live because the bottom is more consistent making the waves break all the way through with less closeouts and more wave face to have fun on. From what my Coach is telling me Cape Hatteras's waves won't be near as forgiving as they are hollower faster and more challenging.

All this week my surfing coach, Josh Wilson (former National Champ) will be working with me on completing turns in more critical parts of the wave and explaining contest strategy for Easterns. Josh has been working with me since the NSSA East Coast Championships (spring 2006) and has improved my surfing and strategy significantly, his training includes running, sprinting, paddling, Yoga as well as surfing. We ran practice heats last night with four other remarkable surfers from our area, Sean Bowman, Steve Baker, Loco (Tony) and Bradley-B (sorry, I don't know their full names). I placed 2nd behind Bowman in the first heat and 3rd in the second round. My sights are set on beating Bowman at least once this fall as he's the alpha male in the lineup and capable of anything from airs and full-on rail turns in critical parts of the wave, the later is a MUST in competition.
