Juno Beach Pier NSSA Contest
This week of January 26-30 I was trying to wait out the week patiently till the NSSA contest coming up for the weekend. I knew the contest was to be held at the Juno Pier, one of my favorite spots to surf in Florida, and I could hardly sit still through school. I had been keeping up with the reports all week and as for the wave conditions everything looked like a go. The winds were right and there was a little swell on its way as well. I was so excited when my dad came early to pick me up on Friday before school got out (getting me out of a spanish quiz I wasn't looking forward to taking) so we could start making the drive down south. Me, my mom, and little sister were headed out to my aunt's house where we would be staying for part of the weekend (my dad had to work the next day so he couldn't make it but he called me before my heat and cheered me on) it was going to be an all girls night. We checked the surf when we got there and to my dismay it was flat! I wasn't to worried though because I knew south Florida was notorious for catching swell over a very short period of time and it would most likely be awesome in the morning.
We all ate a good meal and gelled out at my aunt's house that night and woke up early the next morning to head down to the beach. The waves had picked up as I thought they would but it wasn't as perfect as I had hoped it would be. Never the less it was still fun. The waves were about 3-5 ft. and semi-glass with the waves going side-shore. I had a fun free surf session and almost did a reversal, then there was two of my women's heats that ran early in the morning. I surfed pretty good in both heats even though it was kinda tough conditions, I ended up placing 1st in both of them. To kill some time before surfing for the Satellite High surf team event, my friend, Hailey and I skated around a bunch and did our best to keep warm (did I mention it was absolutely freezing this day?) until my next heat came up. I surfed the best in this heat I felt, and our team ended up winning the high school competition! It was a really fun day and I enjoyed hanging with my awesome friend Hailey who ended up spending the rest of the weekend at my house, surfing and skateboarding. I can't wait till next NSSA.
