Rocky Point was simply amazing... If it wasn't for the crowds, I would have stayed there the whole time. Shallow reef and a turn in the beach makes a remarkable, fun, fast and difficult break for surfers.
Rocky Point...
A Surfer's Paradise
I guess I was too naive to know the first time I paddled out at Rocky Point. I caught loads of nice waves and simply had a blast! Several photographers complimented me and some even published my photos on their sites. I was having so much fun I didn't realize that Keana Keenely was surfing right beside me almost the whole time, I hope I didn't cut her off...
I had read an article on surfline about Rocky Point and Coco Ho.My surfing coach Josh Wilson had surfed Rocky's last year in his traveling past and informed me it was a blast. So without regard to the shallow reef, clear water and loads of surfers, I just paddled out and... well... just surfed my little heart out.
Paddling back out and surfing the next two days was quite different as the crowds seemed aware that this little 14 year old 80 pound Floridian girl had caught her quota of waves the day before and frustration set in as my father let me know that my wave count had diminished significantly. After all he was tied to the beach for hours at a time watching me and recording the session(s) on video and camera.
Below is a photograph dad took as the sun set west of Rocky Point and looking down the beach at a place called Gas Chambers. Notice the rocks and reef protruding from the water and into the lineup. The big rock you see in the foreground is called punch rock. I suppose because it's punched a many of surfers. Viking's Rolando repeatedly said about Rocky Point "I no like". |
