Guatemala Surfing Trip
I was nervous about going on a surf trip in Guatemala after
reading about how hostile the country is, but upon meeting
the Guatemala surf posse at the airport in Guatemala City
my fears quickly vanished. Driving nearly three hours to Sipacote
and taking a short boat ride across the lagoon to our resort
and restaurant we were greeted with chest high semi chop/glass
waves for the next couple of hours.
Viking Surfboards arranged for both Josh Wilson and myself
to travel to Guatemala to finish the last segment in their
Guatemala Surf documentary (due out later this summer). It's
quite an honor to be asked to participate in this event as
a girl grom surfer and I was a little nervous about the beach
breaks but found some great waves and some really nice barrels
to boot.
Josh quickly set the pace for me on the first day and then
charged some awesome barrel rides setting the example for
me to follow.
We met the most extraordinary people on the trip, but my
favorite was Mario (AKA Waimea) and his daughter Melody. While
the focus of the trip was the surf... the highlights were
the rich Guatemalan culture and wonderful people we met along
the way. Watching Waimea and Melody dance and getting dance
lessons overlooking a perfect beach break while dining on
fresh seafood. Christian sipped on some cashew fruit
concoction or 23 year old Guatemalan rum made the trip even
more exotic and enlightening. We also had the pleasure of
surfing many days with Sophia's father and Viking's CEO Christian
(I cut him off on as many waves as I could).
It wouldn't be right for me not to mention Dennis, our fun
loving tour guide and dining companion that made the trip
even more delightful. The Guatemala surf team (Machete, Christian
and others) and all the surfers that we fell in love with
over the week that we stayed. [Next]
